Why is online safety important?
The internet is a helpful tool—but just like locking your front door, it’s important to protect yourself while you’re online. This page will show you simple ways to keep your personal information, devices, and accounts safe.

Online Safety Basics
Using Strong Passwords
Creating strong passwords is incredibly important to keep your accounts on the internet secure. For any password, we recommend following the guidelines below:
| Guideline | Recommendation | Example/Tip |
| Length | Your password should be at least 16 characters. | 7nKL6j0AyQ3PjNfspb |
| Content | 1. Use a string of mixed-case letters, numbers and symbols OR 2. Create a passphrase of 4-7 unrelated words | 1. qA-7K5?)A*2u,nMb81 OR 2.DogFluteSummerPlateVolvo |
| Repetition | Avoid using the same passwords – it makes you more vulnerable to be hacked! | Use a password manager tool to keep track of your passwords in once place! |
How to recognize safe or unsafe websites

Check that the website uses HTTPS over HTTP. The “S” in HTTPS stands for “secure”, meaning that the website users SSL, or a Secure Socket Layer, to help prevent others from accessing your sensitive data.
- Click next to the website URL in the search bar and see if the connection is confirmed as secure!
Keeping Your Software Updated
An update is a new version of an application or system that might eliminate bugs, enhance device performance and, more importantly, fix security flaws.
